Designing With, Not For: Adaptive Design and Human-Centered Problem Solving in the Classroom

Using adaptive apparel design as a case study, this session explores how authentic, human-centered design challenges can create meaningful opportunities for students to practice empathy, collaboration, iteration, and applied problem-solving. I’ll share examples from my adaptive apparel course, along with insights from a newly developed open educational resource that incorporates the voices and perspectives of different members of an adaptive design team. Participants will consider how designing with, rather than simply for, others can strengthen student learning and explore practical ways to bring authentic voices, stakeholder perspectives, and real-world challenges into courses across disciplines.
