Where do you find data for your research, and how do you know if you can trust it? This workshop introduces a practical framework for locating and evaluating data sources, with an emphasis on materials used in digital scholarship work: historical GIS, text data, and image and media collections. We'll also cover sources of more general-purpose data such as demographic datasets, and discuss questions you can ask of any dataset regardless of discipline: Where did it come from? How current and complete is it? What are its biases and gaps? What can you legally do with it? Leave with strategies you can apply to your own research, whatever your field.
